Since I am in Chapter 5 and Thanksgiving is right around the corner, on the last day of school we have the Coronation dance at night and many students out of our classroom for a food drive and delivering food baskets.   I have my kids do something for extra credit.  This year they will make Pans pipes in the class and then for extra credit play a song for me.  I am attaching the directions for the pipes and some music if anyone is interested.  And no I can not get them to play but the kids always can.

Sandy,  Thanks for clear directions for making pan pipes.  Our mini challenge revolved around making stringed instruments.  They made noise, but not much music.  We're going to do the pan pipes today.  I thought I'd be further than I am with the required curriculum, and may not finish chapter 5 by the end of December.  Kids are learning physics and kids are "lined up to take Active Physics" for next term.  Thanks for all your help this term, Dan Grin

Hi Dan,
We just finished the mini challenge on activity 4 and had a great time with it.  I allowed any instrument (home made) as long as they could talk about the wave length and pitch.  It was fun but I think I hate Mary Had a Little Lamb and Jingle Bells.
For fun we invited the other teachers in to hear the whole class play a song after they practiced a bit.  The students in band really did neat instruments out of one straw and could really play.  Wish we had had them in  Boston.
Have a great Christmas.
Sandy
