Did you have any problems with the “For You To Do” section?

In FYTD 1b, it might be confusing to emphasize constant speed while the skateboard is moving across the floor because the board is so obviously slowing down.  Someone suggested having the students only view the portion of the motion that SEEMS constant by having the skateboarder roll past a doorway.  I'm not sure that this is going to be effective with the students.  I'm not sure that this portion of the activity adequately demonstrated the intended concept.

In "For you to do 1b", my students could not balance themselves on the skate-board more than few yards. According to them, the board provided in the kit is small in size. So we used the chair. Surprisingly, they didn't have problem accepting that wall do exert forward push. However, it was pretty hard for them to explain which part of the motion was constant.

My students couldn't stay on the skateboard very long, either. They said it was too small & wasn't made for very much weight. Some of the kids who skateboard said they were too heavy & thought they would break the board. Next year, I'm going to ask them to bring in a skateboard. They did enjoy the activity because they hadn't seen someone standing on a board with both feet & trying to move by using their hands!! Grin  It is hard to emphasize constant speed because none of the demonstrators ever attained much speed or moved very far. I think next year with a bigger board will be better.
